Public Stage

For vocal quartet, multiple cognitive agents, live electronics, real-time notation system, and attendees participation.

“Public stage” was selected for the ICMC 2023 conference in Shenzhen and premiered on the 16th of October. The singers that performed the work were: Soprano: YU Ya Alto: ZHANG Wan’er Tenor: ZHANG Aohan Baritone: TENG Haodon.

“Public stage” is an algorithmic and interactive work, collectively created in real-time during the performance[1].  The score is created through multiple cognitive agents controlled by the attendees. The singers receive the real-time notes composed by this system on his/her mobile phone. Each attendee controls a cognitive agent via a mobile device. “Public stage ” is collectively created in real-time during the performance [2].

Each attendee will use a mobile device to connect to a web server that will automatically assign a cognitive agent to him/her. The attendees will control their agent by selecting whether the agent is on or off and whether the cognitive agent is in a cooperative or competitive mode[2]. Each agent handles one voice of the composition. Each one of the singers will sing the notes produced by a cognitive agent.

If the agent works in the competitive mode, it will try to make the group’s most differentiated music [2]. If the agent is in collaborative mode, it will try to imitate the music that the rest of the agents are producing. The notes the violin player will play are created by a cognitive agent controlled by one of the attendees. The result is a mix of the unamplified singers, the real-time modification, and the synthesis of the sounds of the rest of the score.
